| Ways and Customs In the old days, the farmer himself would kill a pig twice a year, at Martinmas to provide food for the winter and before Lent to provide for spring and summer eating. This was an occasion for families to get together and celebrate. The custom was to give a gift of pork to ones neighbours as a gesture of respect. |
